San Francisco Giants trade rumors: third baseman edition

The General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, Brian Sabean has been in the market for a third baseman since he saw the underwhelming performance from Casey McGehee this season. Casey McGehee was brought in to fill the void that Pablo Sandoval left after he turned down the Giants offer and signed with the Boston Red Sox. Casey McGehee is hitting .198 with 2 HR and 9 RBI, not everyday starter numbers. Thanks to those paltry numbers, McGehee lost his starting position to Matt Duffy. The question facing the Giants is this, do they stick with Matt Duffy at third or seek a replacement at the trade deadline?

Daniel Murphy

Daniel Murphy is the starting second baseman for the New York Mets. He has been linked to San Francisco as a trade target for the Giants to use at third base. Murphy is hitting .283 with 4 home runs and 29 RBI. Murphy was recently placed on the 15-Day DL with a quad injury. The Giants might pull the trigger if they get the right price for the thirty-year-old second baseman that can play either second base or third base. Sabean is known for trading players from the farm system to get players he wants just before the trade deadline is up. The Giants would have to part with a couple of their top prospects for the Mets to give up a valuable player like Murphy.

Dark Horse Candidate: Adrian Beltre

Texas Rangers
Adrian Beltre

Adrian Beltre might be a reach for the Giants to get by the trade deadline but anything can happen. Gaining Beltre would add another power bat to the Giants starting lineup to go along with Posey, Belt, and Pence. Beltre is hitting .257 with 6 home runs and 18 RBI. Beltre is currently on the 15-Day DL with a thumb injury. The Giants might not want to take on Beltre’s contract as he is still owed all of his $16 million this season and $18 million next season. The Giants might roll the dice on Beltre by trading a top prospect to the Texas Ranger’s like they did when they traded their top pitching prospect to the New York Mets for Carlos Beltran back in 2011.

Staying In House: Matt Duffy

The Giants cannot make a trade and keep Matt Duffy as their starting third baseman. Duffy is hitting .282 with 4 HR and 25 RBI. At the age of 24 Duffy can be the answer long term for the Giants if he keeps putting up numbers like he has so far this season. Duffy is a product of the Giants farm system like fellow infielders shortstop Brandon Crawford, second baseman Joe Panik, and first baseman Brandon Belt. If the Giants can keep this core of infielders in tact and producing then they don’t have to worry about these positions for years to come.
